Mikhail Elizarov’s novel “The Librarian” is a work that won the Russian Booker Prize in 2008. At the center of the plot are the books of fictional Soviet writer Dmitry Gromov, which acquire magical properties after his death. They become the target of rival factions, the so-called “libraries,” whose members will stop at nothing to possess them. The novel combines elements of mysticism, social satire, and reflections on the Soviet past.
