The Nose

This satirical novella recounts the incredible misadventures of Major Kovalyov, who wakes up one day to discover that his nose has disappeared. Disfigured and mortified by what has occurred, he embarks on a desperate search for his missing appendage — all while the nose begins living a life of its own. In an ironic fashion, Gogol satirizes social vices and the absurdity of life in early nineteenth-century Russia through comic and often grotesque events.
