The Night in Lisbon

Erich Maria Remarque’s novel “The Night in Lisbon” tells the story of a refugee who meets a man in the port of Lisbon willing to give him and his wife his own documents to flee to America. In exchange, the stranger asks him to listen to his story — a tale of love and hate, betrayal and self-sacrifice, at once tragic and full of hope. The story unfolds against the backdrop of World War II, when thousands of people were fleeing the Nazi regime.
